Starting something new is always the hardest part. This guide walks you through everything — from your first tap to earning the Week of Steel milestone on day 7.
Download and Onboarding
MistyWay's onboarding takes about three minutes. Eight screens personalize your experience:
Welcome — “Your real steps. Epic journey.” Hit Start My Adventure.
Your Goal — “Why are you here?” Four options: epic journey through 45 locations, motivation through streaks, beautiful step stats, or competition on leaderboards. This shapes your starting step goal.
Health Connect — Connect Apple Health (iOS) or Health Connect (Android). If you use a Garmin or Fitbit, see the device setup guide.
Notifications — Daily reminders, friend updates, achievement celebrations. Worth enabling in week one.
Character — Choose from Halfling, Elf, Dwarf, or Mage, each with male and female variants.
Nickname — 3–16 characters. This is what friends see on the leaderboard.
Step Goal — Personalized suggestion based on your motivation choice. Don't overthink it — the 10,000 steps myth is worth reading before you pick a number.
Journey Preview — Welcome to The Meadows, your starting point. Your first quest is already waiting.

Your First Walk: The Fog Clears
Open the map tab and you'll see most of it hidden under fog. That fog clears as you walk — your real-world steps reveal the path ahead. Steps count immediately once Health Connect is active. No need to start a session.
At 200 meters — roughly a three-minute walk — you earn your first achievement: First Footprint. It's the first proof that the world responds to your movement.
Your First Quest: The Wizard and the Stone
The first quest is called First Steps. A wizard approaches and hands you an enchanted stone from his staff. The village elder sends you to find the last of your bloodline, somewhere in the far woods.
The quest unfolds across 11 story segments, each triggered by real walking. You're not reading a static story — you're earning the next chapter. The narrative is paced so a normal day of walking gets you to the next beat.
Adding Friends
Go to your profile and generate a personal 8-character referral code. Share it however you like — text, WhatsApp, a note on the fridge. When your friend enters the code, you're instantly connected as mutual friends. No waiting for acceptance.
You can also search for existing users by name.
Add your first friend and you unlock the First Fellowship achievement. Beyond the badge, having a friend creates accountability — you'll see each other's activity, appear on shared leaderboards, and feel more motivated knowing someone else is watching the same map fill in.

Day 7: Week of Steel
Hit seven consecutive days and MistyWay celebrates with the Week of Steel achievement: “7 days in a row. Your character barely had time to unpack.”
Seven days is where habit research draws the line between a one-time effort and something starting to stick. For the full psychology behind streaks, read the daily walking habit guide.
Tips for Week One
- Set a goal you'll actually hit. A streak broken on day two teaches nothing. Start lower, increase later.
- Walk toward something. A coffee shop, a park, a specific corner. A destination makes the walk feel purposeful.
- Add at least one friend. Accountability is the single biggest predictor of whether week two happens.
Week one is about building familiarity, not performance. The map will be mostly fog. Your stats will be small. That's exactly how it's supposed to look. Keep walking, and it changes faster than you expect.
